ROCHESTER, MN - Riverside Concerts & KAAL TV-6 present GRAMMY? winning new age artists TINGSTAD & RUMBEL on Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 7:30 PM in the Mayo Civic Center - Auditorium. The duo will perform a special holiday concert featuring selections taken from their hugely successful holiday recordings The Gift (1985), Star of Wonder (1994), Peace On Earth (2004) and most recently Comfort and Joy.
Eric Tingstad (guitar) and Nancy Rumbel (woodwinds) are icons of today?s contemporary instrumental music scene. After 16 years, fourteen albums and 1,000 performances, Tingstad and Rumbel are the number one guitar and woodwind duo in the country, if not the world. They make hauntingly, drop-dead beautiful, classically inspired music.
Their first album, a Christmas collection called The Gift, sold ten thousand copies in ten weeks and more importantly, "gave us a template for how our instruments could work together," said Tingstad. Just how well they work together after all those years was underlined in 1998 when their double album, American Acoustic (Narada) was honored as "Acoustic Instrumental Album of the Year" by NAV and spent 10 weeks on the Billboard radio charts. The Gift went on to sell 400,000 copies and is considered a Christmas classic. A testament to their legendary status and unmatched musicianship, the duo?s 2002 offering, Acoustic Garden, was honored with the GRAMMY? for Best New Age Album.
Inspired by the natural world around us, Tingstad & Rumbel?s unique sound exudes the warmth and intimacy of wood, reeds, and strings. It is a captivating, organic music that is as distinctive in sound as it is diverse in scope. The unhurried melody, the space between notes, the sheer loveliness of long, undulating lyrical lines. It creates space, expands time, beckons the imagination to wander a while. Audiences grow very quiet during a Tingstad and Rumbel concert, spellbound. And the music transports. Their obvious chemistry as performers, their endearing sense of humor and the sheer excellence of their music galvanizes an audience into rapt attention. The space in the music allows the imagination to work. As the final notes of a piece fade, a rich silence usually lingers over the audience, some wondering whether to applaud or just savor the silence. In a world where that kind of psychic space is hard won, both Tingstad and Rumbel consider the obvious hush among the audience an accomplishment.
