Stay

Review by: Evans

... at home.
Unless you want a night out to see a psycho-twisted thriller that ends up
not making any sense. All I thought of as the credits rolled was - what's
the point?

I am totally a fan of "the twist" and I think everyone loves "the twist",
but these days I think its pretty hard to do. Quite often we see the adds
for movies claiming "it'll keep you guessing till the end", "an awesome
ride
that will leave you guessing", ".. with an ending that no one will see
coming". Again, I think that's pretty hard to do these days because there
are a lot of movies that have tried to do that, at least it seems like that

to me. Inevitably, some movie will be like another movie that "twisted"
and
you can see "the twist" coming, sometimes even making an exact call. So
then the movie ends up being really bad by getting slapped with the
possibly
worst adjective a movie can get - predictable. Its those movies that make
you feel like the writer/director thinks you're an idiot by either spelling

every little detail out for you as if you couldn't figure out anything by
yourself or by trying to be so clever that they just pass over into the
land
of confusing and flat out dumb (like this movie). I do think its worth the

shot to try and make a good "twister", but there is no "A" for effort. The

movie still better be good.

And not every movie is gonna be good, but when these types of movies are
good, they are really good. For example:

- The Game (perhaps the best)

- Momento

- Identity

- M. Night Shyamalan's stuff

"Stay" just doesn't make the cut. We see references to all these numbers.

I got it. Its something to do with numbers... so I start adding... I
start thinking of what numbers I haven't seen... OK... its got something
to do with two's... NO... three's... NO... its about 7... or not... I'm
lost... where is this going? Unfortunately it goes nowhere. And I had
such high hopes for it too. It has three of my favorites: Ewan McGregor,

Ryan Gosling, and Naomi Watts.

Turns out the "twist", if that's what you wanna call it, is fairly
impossible to guess. Which is kind of the point, but not really. You
don't
want the audience to guess the end, but to never have a chance? It just
puts you on a ride that ends up taking you nowhere and the point of these
types of movies is to take you on a ride where you end up at say... 123
Front St., but you were SUPPOSED to end up at 124 Front St.

You wanna be at "Aww MAN! I was sooo close, but I didn't see that one
coming." not at "Um... ok... and how was I supposed to see that coming?"

Even the Scooby Doo gang wouldn't have gotten this one. Well, maybe them,
but no one else. And that doesn't make for a fun movie.

Until that day,

EVANS = "not to see"
