King Kong
Review by: Evans
Um...
I have still not decided whether or not I liked this. Do I go the route of "been there done that - bad" or
"hey, a new look at an old classic - good"? Decisions decisions. Well, lets try a little from column A
and a little from column B.
A
Do we really need another remake? And this one was a re-remake. Babble babble... Hollywood
needs to make more orginal movies... blah blah. And do you think it could have been any longer?
Plus, it seems like KK went a long way into the woods and did it fast, so how were people who were
simply walking get anywhere close to where KK was in the time span that they did?
B
We go from practically clay-mation, to just really bad effects, to really good effects. It must be
quite a thrill to be able to actually "make" one of your favorite movies. Its fun to watch some
of your favorite actors of this day in a movie that you liked before their day.
Regardless of which way you go, there's one area where I was different than most people I have
talked too. Most complained that the boat ride was way too long, thus boring. I am 180. I thought
the boat ride was cool and I didn't feel bored one bit, but when we got the fight scenes, they were
way too long, thus boring. The two that come to mind are KK vs TRexs, the running of the "bulls"
and the bugs. How many spills and close calls where there going to be with TRex? How slow are
these dinos and how are little human feet keeping up with them while not getting stomped? How long
are these guys gonna be cutting/shooting bugs off themselves before they either die or get rescued?
Especially the bugs. That seemed to take forever, I almost let out my usual "C'mon!"
Jack Black performs well. He's quite a talented actor and if you want to really see him shine, go
search out some "Tenacious D" or go see "High Fidelity". One thing though, didn't his character
die in the remake? I thought he got squashed by KK?
Naomi... my girl. She's still one of my favs and still has the power to make me go see a movie just
because she's in it. She doesn't have a super performance here, like the one she gave in "21 Grams"
that should have won her an oscar, but just having her in the movie is good enough for me.
Adrien Brody. I am gonna say no, but my mind still isn't completely made up on him.
Visually it was impressive and if you are going with "B", then... there ya go.
On a side note, we need to start being careful of not letting movies get away with just having good
effects and no good plot (whether in script form or development of it on film). I think we are
dangerously approaching that line.
This certainly wasn't as fun as a barrel full of monkeys.
Until that day,
EVANS = Um...
"not to see"
I think.
