Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

"The book's better than the movie." How many times do we hear that? I
mean
really... every time there is a movie based on a book, you have the people
that think just because they read the book (or read it earlier in life than
you did) that they are in some special elite club of higher enjoyment or
understanding. Now granted, there is some validity to that. The movie
can't possibly be as long as the book so yes, some stuff needs to be left
out. But when people try to tell you that you can never understand the
story if you didn't read the book - baloney! Let's take "Lord of the
Rings"
for example. Someone told me I would never understand what was really
going
on if I didn't read the books. Well I didn't read the books, I only saw
the
movies, but let me give it a shot. There is a ring that can't fall into
the
hands of the bad guys and the good guys need to destroy it. Am I close?
Sure, I've left out some details, but am I close to the main plot? I
thought so. I prefer the Jim Gaffigan theory: "The book may be better
than
the movie, but you know what I liked about the movie? NO READING." Well
no matter how much you agree with that, this time the "book's better than
the movie" folks are right. I never even read the book, but I am certain
they have to be right. There is no way the book can be worse, or even as
bad, as this movie. With movies based on books, its pretty much just a
case
of how little can they ruin the original story. I say this because I am
not sure that I ever read a bad book. In this movie, I sense some
symbolism
between Earth and the book - absolutely destroyed. Its because I have a
feeling that the book is quite good, but alas, my world may never know. I
assume in ignorance, and will continue to do so.
It was painful to watch. Aaaaahhhhhh! From the first time she was on
camera I was wondering if Zooey Deschanel was ever gonna blink. Once she
did, I really didn't find anything else about this movie to be interested
in. As I am replaying it, or shall I say thinking about it, its just as
painful as thinking on the Vogon's planet. It very well could be that you
have to be into some sort of Douglas Adams cult to truly appreciate the
movie. Honestly, I think anyone that liked the book will be sickened by
this film. Again I am basing this on my assumption that the book is quite
good - I could be way off base. And remember, this isn't a book review or
a comparison. If there was something in the book that wasn't in the movie
that would have helped me appreciate this movie more, or at all, well then
maybe it should have been in the movie. Forget lemon juice to think, I
felt like it was being poured into my eyes.
There were some cameos though. That was neat. I am pretty sure I saw Chad
Kroeger? And if it wasn't him then that's too bad, too bad, TOO BAD... If
it wasn't him then it was certainly Sammy Haggar. Why even Elton John took
time away from planning his wedding to stop by.
Poor Sam Rockwell. His role wasn't so bad, but I like everything he's done
so I think I was predisposed to like him here too.
The one truly bright spot you can take out of this movie is the manic
depressive robot. He had some pretty good lines (and 3 reviews ago you
thought I had nothing nice to say about robots). After watching this
movie, I feel I can really connect with him.
All in all, the guide is wrong - PANIC!!! Ask it if you should see this
movie, see what it says - I dare you. If you can't get your hands on the
guide, just try a magic 8 ball.
The doors weren't the only things sighing and the dolphins were right - GET
OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!
All this without even getting shot by the "point of view" gun. I better
quit before I get in the crosshairs.
Until that day,
EVANS = "not to see"
PS - Comedian Brad Stein raises an excellent point: If dolphins are so
smart, why don't they swim around the tuna nets? Think about it.
