Batman Begins
Review by: Evans
And so it begins...
What a cool ending to the beginning! Definitely a major psych up to go back
and watch Michael Keaton in the original. I am referring of course to "Batman", not to be confused with "Batman: The Movie." Equally awesome, but
in totally different ways. Until the new Batman tried to be, or just ended up in my eyes trying to be like the old Batman - the cool, dopey Batman.
Adam West and Burt Ward were the cool, dopey Batman (and Robin). Not to be confused with the George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell horribly bad, dopey Batman (and Robin). However, let me add that I didn't mind Chris as Robin.
I think he did a good job, but the last two movies of the four, namely the last, were bad. The 'final' Batman, ie Clooney, was just ... ugh - the movie and the man, er... bat. It got a little too crazy and wacky and just didn't work for me. The Batman series and original movie were dopey, but it
worked. It was a good guys always win and bad guys are bumbling idiots kind
of Batman. POW! THWACK! ZONK! Yes! Which was fine, but not true.
These were not movies that told the tale of the The Dark Knight as I understand it. What do I mean? Well, I read very few comics growing up. I
was a sports and Nintendo kid. I didn't do much reading, still don't. But my buddy read them all (ones I had heard of and ones I didn't even think
existed) and schooled me on a regular basis when I would make some comment about characters like I knew what I was talking about when we were out hitting golf balls at the park. To me it seems like the later Batman movies
were what people who don't read comic books thought comic books were like (kind of like me) - POW! THWACK! ZONK! Silly even.
I luckily found out that that was not always the case, particularly with Batman. When I first found out that people were afraid and even hated Batman, I was in shock. How can they? He's the good guy! But the more I learn about The Dark Knight Batman versus the POW! THWACK! ZONK! Batman, the more I like. Now this story doesn't exactly match up with the Michael Keaton Batman story, and I don't know which one is more true to the original
comic tale, but I think they both rock and I don't really mind that they don't match up. In fact, I wouldn't mind if they redid "Batman" and continued the cool vibe of "Batman Begins" - even if they can't get Jack as Joker. They could get Sam Rockwell.
What an exciting ride this was! It was cool to see how Batman got his skillz. I always wondered how a rich boy ended up being so tough. It was also REALLY cool to see how he got all his gadgets. The first Batmobile is definitely the coolest. It was so tough it didn't even need "shields." The
battle scenes are awesome and the hallucinations are pretty sweet too.
There's not one part of this movie that I didn't enjoy. The only bad thing were the images of an "intense" Tom Cruise flashing through my head ever time I saw Katie, but that's not the movies fault, its Tom's.
Christian Bale is a stud (go see "The Machinist" if you want to see an actor
give it all the sake of the role). He's a cool Bruce Wayne. He played the role of the spoiled rich kid well, when Alfred made him, and he was nothing short of tough when playing the hero. Too bad he did Batman because I wouldn't mind seeing Christian playing Superman.
Michael Caine was cool too. His best role since he played the detective from the old made-for-TV mini-series "Jack the Ripper."
Great movie! It should blow you away. Go see it, even more than once. I don't think anyone will blame you.
Until that day,
